Zentralbibliothek Zürich

The Zentralbibliothek Zürich (ZB) is the library of the canton, of the city and of the University of Zürich. The manuscript collections in this library represent a substantial part of the local cultural heritage. They comprise sumptuous but also mundane manuscripts, originating from cloisters or private libraries in Zürich, dating from the medieval and early modern periods; also, diverse collections of letters, as well as the archives of private families, societies and guilds. Numerous estates of private papers of important scholars, artists, musicians and writers are housed here, as are music and map manuscripts. The majority of these collections derive from two big historic libraries of Zürich, the City Library, founded in 1629 and the County Library, founded in 1835 (encompassing manuscripts from the Abbey libraries of the Grossmünster in Zürich and the monastery in Rheinau). Since its inception in 1916, this stock has been housed in Zentralbibliothek Zürich, and has continued to be augmented and expanded. The platform e-manuscripta.ch will provide digital access to a representative selection of predominantly modern (also some early modern) documents, from the Departments of Manuscripts, Music and Cartography (maps and panoramas).
